Gregory Harrison is an acclaimed American actor born in Avalon, California, whose career has spanned more than five decades across television, film, and stage. He rose to national prominence as Dr. George Alonzo “Gonzo” Gates on the hit medical drama "Trapper John, M.D." (1979–1986), earning critical praise and a devoted fan base for his charismatic and compassionate performance.
Beyond his seven-year run on "Trapper John, M.D.," Harrison has built an impressive television résumé, appearing in "Logan's Run," the epic NBC miniseries "Centennial," "Falcon Crest," "One Tree Hill," "Joey," "Rizzoli & Isles," and most recently a multi-year run on "General Hospital." He has also starred in more than 50 television movies and over a dozen feature films.
Early in his career, Harrison portrayed the title role in "Logan’s Run" and Levi Zendt in "Centennial," based on James A. Michener’s sweeping novel. After a guest appearance on "MASH," he achieved widespread fame on "Trapper John, M.D.," starring opposite Pernell Roberts. He remained with the series through the middle of its seventh season before departing to pursue new opportunities.
Harrison’s versatility was on full display throughout the 1980s and ’90s. His role as exotic dancer John Phillips in the TV movie "For Ladies Only" made him a pop-culture favorite, a persona he later playfully spoofed in the miniseries "Fresno." He later joined the cast of "Falcon Crest" in its final season and went on to star in the CBS sitcom "The Family Man." In 1996, he delivered a moving performance opposite Eric Roberts in "It’s My Party," a poignant film about love, friendship, and the AIDS crisis.
In addition to his screen work, Harrison has enjoyed a rich stage career, appearing on Broadway and in regional theater productions including "Steel Pier," "Follies," "Chicago," "Guys and Dolls," and "The Lion in Winter." Offscreen, he is widely respected for his philanthropy and advocacy. A passionate environmentalist and lifelong surfer, he has served for decades on the advisory board of the Surfrider Foundation. He also supports cancer charities and, with more than 38 years of sobriety, remains dedicated to helping others live healthy, fulfilling lives.
