If you’re as obsessed with television as I am, then you already know the joy of discovering a TV adaptation that doesn’t just match the movie it came from—but sometimes even outshines it. Think “M*A*S*H,” “Fargo,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Alice,…
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had my head buried in a book. My mother loves to tell people that when I was a kid, any time we went shopping, I’d skip right past the candy aisle and go straight for the books. No toys, no chocolate — just giv…
When I was a teenager back in the 1980s, one of the biggest movie stars around was Eric Roberts. With his bad-boy good looks, magnetic screen presence, and intense acting style, he was the kind of star who made headlines — and made hearts race. Fro…
When October 31st rolls around and the moon is full (cue the Psycho violins), most of us trade in trick-or-treating for a bowl of popcorn, a cozy blanket, and a good old-fashioned scare. Sure, costumes and candy are great, but let’s be honest — the …
The summer of 1975 gave us a movie that changed everything — “JAWS”! It wasn’t just a hit — it was the blockbuster that invented the summer blockbuster! Audiences lined up around the block, popcorn in hand and nerves on edge, to experience Steven S…
Back in 1995, I wandered into a movie theater to see a little indie LGBTQ gem called “Jeffrey”—and I walked out completely obsessed. But before we dive into the what and who of it all, I have to start with the why. See, when the AIDS epidemic began…
In the spring of 1990, a very funny—and criminally underrated—ensemble sitcom took flight on NBC. In the same vein as the 1980s mega-hit “Cheers,” this show traded the bar for a small commuter airport on the island of Nantucket, where the laughs wer…
From the earliest days of Hollywood, tough women have lit up the screen, captivating audiences with grit, wit, and unshakable spirit. In the 1940s and ’50s, legends like Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, and Joan Crawford weren’t just g…
When Flash Gordon rocketed into theaters in December 1980, I practically broke the sound barrier sprinting to my local multiplex. Thirteen years old, clutching popcorn like it was rocket fuel, I sat wide-eyed as Mongo exploded onto the screen. The c…
Think back to your favorite TV shows—how many of them had a scene-stealing animal in the cast? From loyal family dogs to wisecracking horses, from mischievous monkeys to a pig with star power, television has long had a soft spot for its four-legged …
Back in the late ’70s and ’80s, Greg Evigan wasn’t just a star—he was a certified TV heartthrob. Whether he was cruising the highways in his hit action-comedy “B.J. and the Bear”—driving that shiny red-and-white truck with his sidekick Bear the chim…
When you picture a TV dad, who comes to mind first? The wise advice-giver who somehow always knows the right thing to say? The stern disciplinarian who grounds you one minute and sneaks you ice cream the next? The lovable goofball who falls asleep i…
Family-centered TV series have been part of television since its earliest days—think “The Goldbergs” in 1949 or “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” in the 1950s. So when ABC premiered “The Wonder Years” in 1988, another family sitcom might not hav…
Picture it: Rydell High, late 1950s. The jukebox is spinning, the soda shop is hopping, and strutting through the halls in matching satin jackets is the coolest girl gang on campus — The Pink Ladies. With their bubblegum-pink coats, tough-girl swagg…
The first time I saw "Grease" on the big screen, I was instantly hooked—on the story, the music, the dancing, the hair… and yes, the Pink Ladies. Sure, Danny and Sandy had my heart, but there was one character who completely stole the show for me: F…
Once upon a time in Hollywood, being openly gay was considered a career killer. For decades, major stars like Rock Hudson, Montgomery Clift, Tab Hunter, and Sal Mineo stayed in the closet—forced to protect their image with carefully crafted studio l…
During the pandemic, I stumbled across the original “Tales of the City” miniseries—and I was instantly hooked. Armistead Maupin’s colorful world of 1970s San Francisco pulled me in, and I fell in love with the characters: Mary Ann Singleton, the wid…

When I was a kid growing up in New York, one of my absolute favorite TV traditions was watching The 4:30 Movie on WABC Channel 7. And let me tell you—when it was “Planet of the Apes” week? Forget it! I was glued to the screen, totally captivated by …
Long before any Real Housewife flipped a table in Jersey, screamed in Beverly Hills, or held a fruit in Atlanta, there were the original queens of primetime: the ladies of “Knots Landing.” Honey, they didn’t need confessionals, taglines, or Bravo ed…
In the 1980s and 1990s, TV audiences were absolutely hooked on their primetime soap operas—and I was no exception. At one point, I was glued to "Dallas," "Dynasty," "The Colbys," "Falcon Crest," and, of course, my favorite: "Knots Landing" all at th…
As a kid, I was completely obsessed with TV cop shows. Whether it was “Dragnet,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “CHiPs,” or “Barney Miller,” I logged countless hours glued to the boob tube watching the “good guys” chase down the “bad guys” — usually in polyester …
