Celebrity Parents And Their LGBTQ+ Kids

Celebrity Parents And Their LGBTQ+ Kids

Happy Pride Month!

Pride has always been a joyful, empowering, and deeply meaningful time in my life. It’s a time when I feel an incredible sense of community and connection with my LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters—a celebration of who we are, how far we’ve come, and the work that still lies ahead.

I’m fortunate to have a loving and accepting family, along with an amazing circle of friends who support one another through life’s ups and downs. But every Pride Month, when I see rainbow flags waving proudly in the air, I find myself reflecting on the young, frightened, and uncertain gay boy I once was.

I remember how overwhelming it felt to grow up believing I was different, wondering if I would ever truly belong. Then came the first Pride celebration I attended—a moment I’ll never forget. For the first time, I was surrounded by people who understood exactly who I was. I wasn’t the odd man out. I wasn’t hiding. I was simply accepted.

That’s why Pride matters.

It matters for the young people who may be feeling isolated, misunderstood, or afraid to be themselves. It matters because visibility creates hope. It reminds those who are still finding their way that they are not alone and that there is a vibrant, welcoming community ready to embrace them.

And for those of us who are already living openly and proudly, Pride is an opportunity to uplift others, celebrate authenticity, and help the next generation discover just how extraordinary they truly are.

In honor of my fascinating conversation with writer, commentator, and LGBTQ+ activist James “Duke” Mason on Hollywood Obsessed, I wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the many actors, musicians, and public figures who proudly support their LGBTQ+ children.

These families have used their platforms to champion equality, visibility, acceptance, and unconditional love. Their examples remind us that family support can be life-changing—and that celebrating who our children are is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give.

Now that’s a wonderful reason to celebrate Pride.

CHER AND CHAZ BONO

Few celebrity parent-child relationships have had as profound an impact on LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance as that of Cher and her son, Chaz Bono. Their deeply personal journey—from Chaz’s coming out to Cher’s evolution into one of his strongest allies—has provided a powerful and relatable example for families navigating gender identity and transition.

Long celebrated as a beloved LGBTQ+ icon, Cher has used her enormous platform to champion equality and inclusion for decades. Following Chaz’s transition, she became an outspoken advocate for transgender rights and visibility, consistently speaking out against anti-trans legislation and discrimination. Her longstanding commitment to the community was recognized when she received the GLAAD Vanguard Award for her advocacy.

Chaz, meanwhile, has devoted much of his life to advancing LGBTQ+ awareness and acceptance. He previously served as Entertainment Media Director for GLAAD and as a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign. Through his groundbreaking 2011 documentary Becoming Chaz and his candid memoirs, he helped demystify the transition process and offered invaluable representation for transgender individuals and their families.

Cher has been remarkably honest about her own journey. When Chaz first came out as a lesbian in 1987 and later as a transgender man in 2008, she acknowledged that she struggled to understand the changes in her child’s life. Adjusting to new pronouns, coping with the perceived loss of the daughter she thought she knew, and navigating intense media attention proved challenging. Rather than allowing those struggles to create distance, Cher committed herself to learning, growing, and ultimately embracing Chaz fully and unconditionally.

Together, Cher and Chaz have demonstrated that acceptance is sometimes a journey rather than an instant destination. Their story reminds us that love, education, and understanding can transform uncertainty into unwavering support—creating not only a stronger family bond but also meaningful advocacy that has benefited the broader LGBTQ+ community.

EUGENE LEVY AND DAN LEVY

Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy, have become one of the most beloved and influential parent-child duos in entertainment. Through their close family bond, creative partnership, and public advocacy, they have helped advance LGBTQ+ visibility while demonstrating the power of unconditional love and acceptance. Dan, who is openly gay, has often praised his parents, Eugene and Deborah Levy, for creating an environment where he always felt supported and never had to justify who he was.

Together, Eugene and Dan co-created the Emmy Award-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek, which became a landmark series for LGBTQ+ representation. As the show’s creator, showrunner, and star, Dan portrayed David Rose, an openly pansexual character whose relationships were depicted without prejudice or discrimination. The show’s hopeful vision of acceptance resonated with audiences around the world and helped redefine LGBTQ+ storytelling on television.

Eugene has also embraced his role as a vocal ally. He has openly discussed Dan’s coming-out journey in interviews and on projects such as The Reluctant Traveler, sharing the importance of giving children the space to come out on their own terms. By speaking candidly as a proud father, Eugene has helped encourage other parents to approach their LGBTQ+ children with understanding, patience, and compassion.

Dan’s work has earned him honors including the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award and GLAAD’s Davidson/Valentini Award. Beyond their own accomplishments, the Levys have inspired a devoted fan community that has raised thousands of dollars for organizations such as Trans Lifeline and LGBT YouthLine. Together, Eugene and Dan have shown how family acceptance can foster not only personal confidence and success, but meaningful change for the broader LGBTQ+ community.

Pop music icon Belinda Carlisle and her son, James Duke Mason, share a close and inspiring relationship that has evolved into a powerful force for LGBTQ+ advocacy. Since Duke came out as gay at the age of 14, mother and son have used their public platforms to champion equality, support LGBTQ+ youth, and encourage families to embrace their children with love and acceptance.

Their experience inspired them to become active advocates, participating in fundraising campaigns, awareness initiatives, and national events that help other families better understand and support their LGBTQ+ loved ones. SALLY FIELD AND SAM GREISMAN

Academy Award-winning actress Sally Field and her son Sam Greisman share a loving and deeply supportive relationship that has made them powerful advocates for LGBTQ+ equality. Greisman, a writer and producer and the youngest of Field’s three children, came out as gay with the full love and acceptance of his mother. Since then, the pair have used their voices and public platforms to promote understanding, visibility, and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

Together, they have become outspoken supporters of federal protections for LGBTQ+ Americans. Field and Greisman notably appeared in a Human Rights Campaign video urging Congress to pass the Equality Act, highlighting the reality that LGBTQ+ rights can vary dramatically depending on where a person lives. Their message was simple but powerful: every person deserves equal protection under the law, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Field has also been a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. She frequently encourages parents to embrace their children for who they are and to lead with love rather than fear. Drawing from her own experience as the proud mother of a gay son, she has spoken openly about the importance of acceptance and the profound impact family support can have on a young person’s life.

Their relationship is a beautiful example of unconditional love in action. Through their advocacy, Sally and Sam continue to inspire families everywhere to celebrate authenticity, stand up for equality, and support the LGBTQ+ community with compassion and pride.

MAGIC JOHNSON AND EJ JOHNSON

Basketball legend Magic Johnson and his son EJ Johnson share a powerful relationship that has become an inspiring example of love, acceptance, and personal growth. Their journey together has resonated with countless families, particularly within the Black community and the sports world, where conversations about LGBTQ+ identity have not always been easy or common.

When EJ came out to his parents as a teenager, Magic has candidly acknowledged that he initially struggled to reconcile the news with the expectations he had once imagined for his son. However, rather than allowing those expectations to define their relationship, Magic chose to listen, learn, and grow. Over time, their father-son bond evolved into a close friendship built on mutual respect, admiration, and unconditional love.

Magic has often credited EJ with expanding his perspective and teaching him valuable lessons about authenticity and acceptance. Inspired by his son’s confidence and willingness to live openly, Magic embraced EJ exactly as he is and became one of his strongest supporters. Today, he frequently speaks about the importance of loving children unconditionally and allowing them to live their truth.

EJ has become a prominent LGBTQ+ advocate and media personality through appearances on Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, EJ NYC, and as the voice of Michael Collins on The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. BARBRA STREISAND AND JASON GOULD

Entertainment legend Barbra Streisand and her son, Jason Gould, share a close and enduring relationship built on unconditional love, artistic collaboration, and a lifelong commitment to social justice. After Jason came out as gay in his early twenties, Streisand became an even more vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using her immense platform to challenge discrimination and promote equality.

Their bond was tested when Jason was publicly outed by a tabloid in 1991, an invasion of privacy that deeply upset the family. Rather than retreating from the spotlight, Streisand responded by educating herself on LGBTQ+ issues and becoming a passionate ally. She has frequently spoken about the importance of acceptance and has long used her celebrity to support causes that protect and uplift LGBTQ+ people.

Together, they have combined activism with philanthropy through the work of the The Streisand Foundation, which has contributed millions of dollars to organizations focused on civil rights, AIDS research, healthcare, education, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. Jason has played an active role in the foundation's mission, helping continue a family legacy of using influence and resources to advance social change.

Streisand has never hesitated to put her convictions into action. In 1992, she famously boycotted the state of Colorado after voters approved Amendment 2, a controversial measure that sought to prevent local governments from enacting protections for LGBTQ+ citizens. Her decision drew national attention and underscored her belief that discrimination should never go unchallenged.

Jason also encouraged his mother in her decades-long effort to bring playwright Larry Kramer's groundbreaking AIDS-crisis drama, The Normal Heart, to the screen. Although the project faced numerous obstacles over the years, Streisand's dedication to the story reflected her deep commitment to raising awareness about the AIDS epidemic and honoring the lives affected by it.

Perhaps most telling is the gratitude Streisand has expressed toward the LGBTQ+ community throughout her career. In her memoir, My Name Is Barbra, she credits queer audiences and supporters—particularly those she encountered performing at New York's legendary gay nightclub, The Lion—with helping launch her career. That appreciation has remained a constant throughout her life.

Together, Barbra and Jason exemplify the power of family support, proving that love, advocacy, and activism can reinforce one another. Through their philanthropy, creative collaborations, and unwavering commitment to equality, they continue to inspire LGBTQ+ people and allies around the world.

JAMIE LEE CURTIS AND RUBY GUEST

Academy Award-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter, Ruby Guest, share a loving and supportive relationship that has made them powerful advocates for transgender visibility and LGBTQ+ equality. Since Ruby came out as transgender in 2020, Curtis has embraced her role as both a devoted mother and outspoken ally, using her platform to promote understanding, acceptance, and equal rights.

Curtis has spoken candidly about her own learning journey, acknowledging that she had to let go of outdated assumptions about gender and educate herself on transgender experiences. Rather than portraying herself as an expert, she openly discusses the challenges and growth that came with supporting Ruby, hoping to encourage other families to approach similar situations with compassion and an open mind. Although Ruby generally prefers to stay out of the spotlight, she joined her mother for a public interview to help other families navigating a loved one's transition.

Beyond their personal story, Curtis has become one of Hollywood's most visible defenders of transgender rights. During a post-Oscar appearance on the Today show, she humorously announced that her Academy Award statuette would use "they/them" pronouns as a gesture of solidarity with the trans and nonbinary communities. She has repeatedly stated that "trans rights are human rights" and has used her voice to challenge discrimination, political attacks, and harmful rhetoric directed at transgender people.

Curtis has also been a vocal supporter of organizations such as Free Mom Hugs, which promotes LGBTQ+ acceptance through education and visibility. Her commitment to the group's mission was so strong that she announced plans to develop a television project based on the life of founder Sara Cunningham. Together, Jamie Lee and Ruby demonstrate how unconditional love, education, and advocacy can create a more accepting world for LGBTQ+ people everywhere.

JENNIFER LOPEZ AND EMME MUÑIZ

Global superstar Jennifer Lopez shares a loving and supportive relationship with her child, Emme Muñiz, and has used her worldwide platform to promote acceptance, visibility, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ people. Through both her words and actions, Lopez has consistently demonstrated her commitment to creating a supportive environment where her children can express themselves authentically and without fear of judgment.

In 2022, Lopez drew widespread praise during a performance at the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation Blue Diamond Gala when she introduced Emme using they/them pronouns before inviting them onstage for a duet of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years." By casually and respectfully honoring Emme's identity in front of a global audience, Lopez helped normalize the use of gender-neutral language and sent a powerful message of acceptance to families everywhere.

Lopez has often spoken about the importance of allowing children the freedom to discover who they are and express themselves openly. She has emphasized that a parent's role is to provide love, encouragement, and emotional support, creating a home where children feel safe being their authentic selves.

Her advocacy extends beyond her own family. In 2020, Lopez used her social media platforms to promote Draw With Me, a documentary about her transgender and nonbinary "nibling" (sibling's child), Brendon Scholl, highlighting the importance of family acceptance for transgender youth. Combined with her longstanding support of LGBTQ+ causes and recognition from organizations such as GLAAD, Lopez's actions demonstrate a genuine commitment to equality, visibility, and unconditional love.
