Trivia - Ugly Betty

Trivia - Ugly Betty

There’s nothing quite like a great feel-good TV series! You know the kind — a show that makes you laugh, warms your heart, and leaves you smiling like you've just visited old friends. One series that checks all those boxes is ABC’s beloved comedy-drama “Ugly Betty”, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year! Developed by Silvio Horta and inspired by the hugely successful Colombian telenovela “Yo soy Betty, la fea,” created by Fernando Gaitán, the series brought a wonderfully refreshing underdog story to our television screens.

At the heart of the show was Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), a smart, sweet, hardworking young woman from Queens who unexpectedly lands a job at Mode, one of New York's most prestigious high-fashion magazines. There's just one little problem: Betty doesn't exactly fit the glamorous image of the fashion world! Armed with her trademark braces, oversized glasses, colorful wardrobe, and big heart, Betty navigates the cutthroat fashion industry while winning over colleagues, challenging stereotypes, and reminding everyone that true beauty comes from within. And, of course, she never loses sight of the family and values that keep her grounded.

Beyond its hilarious fashion mishaps, outrageous characters, and over-the-top office drama, “Ugly Betty” struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. The series earned widespread acclaim, particularly for Ferrera's performance, while tackling important themes of identity, body image, diversity, and representation. It collected an impressive array of honors, including two Golden Globes, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a prestigious Peabody Award in 2007. It also helped advance Latino and LGBTQ+ visibility on American television. Sadly, despite its devoted following and undeniable charm, the series wrapped up after just four fabulous seasons. And yes, I'm STILL not over it!

In celebration of the show's 20th anniversary — and my recent fascinating conversation with the very handsome Eric Mabius - Episodes 195 & 196 on Hollywood Obsessed Podcast - who brought Betty's boss, Daniel Meade, to life — what better time to revisit this television gem? As the charming, occasionally irresponsible, and initially womanizing editor-in-chief of Mode, Daniel was the privileged son of publishing mogul Bradford Meade (Alan Dale). But beneath that playboy exterior was a character who gradually matured, discovered what really mattered, and developed a wonderfully unexpected bond with Betty. Eric's memorable performance made Daniel one of the show's most entertaining and endearing personalities.

So, what better way to celebrate this fabulous feel-good TV classic than by taking a trip down memory lane and uncovering some fascinating trivia, surprising production secrets, and juicy behind-the-scenes stories about the cast and the making of the series? There's plenty to discover about the stars, the fashion, and the unforgettable moments that made “Ugly Betty” such a television favorite!

Grab your oversized glasses, dust off that colorful Mexican poncho, and get ready to travel back to 2006–2010! We're heading straight into the fabulous, fashion-obsessed world of Mode to unlock the secrets of “Ugly Betty” and discover what really went on behind the scenes of this unforgettable television classic. And remember... it's not about looking fabulous. It's about BEING fabulous!

*************************************************

"Betty la Fea" is the title of the original Colombian telenovela, which inspired numerous international adaptations and spin-offs around the world.

ABC initially favored calling the American adaptation Betty the Ugly. However, showrunner Silvio Horta fought to keep the title Ugly Betty, even typing his preferred title onto every script until the network finally relented!

When Silvio Horta first pitched the series to television executives, he envisioned Betty as an FBI agent. ABC's executives, however, had other ideas. They encouraged him to stick with the original Colombian telenovela's concept, reasoning that if it worked, why change it?

The series was produced by Salma Hayek's production company, Ventanarosa, along with Silent H Productions, Reveille Productions, and ABC Studios.

Believe it or not, there was an actual fashion publication called MODE, geared toward plus-size women. Fortunately, the magazine ceased publication in 2001, five years before Betty Suarez entered the fictional fashion world of Mode.

Before landing the role of Betty's outspoken older sister, Hilda Suarez, Ana Ortiz originally auditioned for the lead role of Betty!

Just two weeks before landing her role on Ugly Betty, Becki Newton filmed a commercial for Olive Garden. The commercial continued airing throughout the show's first season, prompting her castmates to affectionately nickname her "Breadsticks." The writers even got in on the joke by having Amanda appear in a commercial for a fictional restaurant called "Medieval Times."

When casting Betty's father, Ignacio Suarez, producers initially thought Tony Plana, who was 54 at the time, was too young for the role. They were looking for someone in their 60s or 70s. Determined to win the part, Plana dyed white streaks into his hair to appear older and submitted an audition tape that immediately won them over!

America Ferrera didn't actually wear real braces to play Betty. Instead, she wore a custom-made, clip-on dental appliance attached to a plastic retainer that she could easily remove between scenes.

Creating Betty's signature look wasn't exactly a walk down the runway. America Ferrera recalls trying on approximately 200 pairs of glasses before the show's pilot was filmed!

Actor Michael Urie, who brilliantly portrayed the sarcastic and fashion-obsessed Mark St. James, originally thought his role would be a one-off appearance. Little did he know he'd become one of the show's most beloved characters!

In his very first scene visiting the Mode offices at just 11 years old, Mark Indelicato's character, Justin Suarez, critiques Amanda's shoes and accidentally mispronounces the designer name "Manolo Blahnik" as "Manolo Blotnik."

Actor Eric Mabius revealed that he still owns some of Daniel Meade's fabulous suits. After the series was canceled, the costumes were put up for sale, and Mabius took advantage of the opportunity, purchasing his character's suits for just one-tenth of their original cost!

Marc St. James's birth name was originally written as Marc Weiner. This was revealed in a deleted scene in which Betty discovers his original name and Marc explains that he changed it to avoid being teased.

Chris Williams, who plays Wilhelmina Slater's outrageous drag-queen parody, Wilhelldiva Hater, is actually the brother of his Ugly Betty co-star Vanessa Williams!

Producers initially envisioned Christina McKinney as an American character. However, after meeting actress Ashley Jensen and falling in love with her natural Scottish accent, they rewrote the character to incorporate Jensen's Scottish background.

Rebecca Romijn was already a fan of Ugly Betty when she met with the show's creators. She hoped to play a friend who would help Betty, but instead was offered the much more dramatic role of Alexis Meade. Romijn has since openly acknowledged that casting a cisgender actress to portray a transgender character, as was done with Alexis in 2007, would not—and should not—happen today.

Salma Hayek enjoyed being on the Ugly Betty set so much that she used her position as an executive producer to secure the role of Sofia Reyes. She also appeared as the nurse in the telenovela watched by the Suarez family throughout the series!

The fictional telenovela clips featured throughout Ugly Betty weren't entirely make-believe. While the shows themselves were created for the series, many of the performers were actual celebrities in Mexican entertainment, much like Salma Hayek was before making her Hollywood crossover.

Judith Light, who played the formidable Claire Meade, joined the series after the pilot aired. A recurring character was specifically created for her, and she eventually became a regular member of the cast.

When America Ferrera won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2007, she made history as the first Latina woman ever to win in that category!

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani-born activist and internationally recognized advocate for girls' education and women's rights, has cited Ugly Betty as an early and important influence on her development as a feminist. Malala also became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient in history.

Ashley Jensen, who played Christina McKinney, remained with Ugly Betty for three seasons. When production relocated from Los Angeles to New York, she decided to step away as a regular cast member. Fortunately, fans got to see her again when she returned for a guest appearance in the final season.

Following Ugly Betty's debut, People magazine included Eric Mabius among its "Sexiest Men Alive" selections in 2006, with a category specifically tailored to his television editor-in-chief role. Naturally, his friends never let him forget it!

That beautiful pearl necklace featuring the letter "B" that Betty frequently wears is a replica of the famous necklace associated with Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.

Look closely at Betty's bedroom nightstand and you'll spot a copy of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It's a fun little nod to America Ferrera, who starred as Carmen in the 2005 film adaptation of the popular book!

Although the Suarez family is portrayed as Mexican-American, none of the actors playing the immediate family members are ethnically Mexican. America Ferrera is of Honduran descent, Tony Plana is Cuban, Ana Ortiz is Puerto Rican and Irish, and Mark Indelicato is Puerto Rican and Italian.

Although Ugly Betty is set in New York City and its pilot was filmed there, the first two seasons were actually filmed entirely in Los Angeles. Stock footage and establishing shots helped create the illusion of New York. Production finally relocated to the Big Apple at the beginning of Season 3!

Judith Light and America Ferrera developed a wonderfully close, mother-daughter relationship while working together on the series. Their bond extended well beyond the set, with Light eventually officiating Ferrera's wedding to Ryan Piers Williams!

Christopher Gorham's signature black-rimmed glasses weren't originally part of Henry Grubstick's character. During his costume fitting, Gorham requested them because he felt he looked "too hot" without them! His inspiration came from his own father, an accountant who also wore glasses—just like Henry.

The character of Fey Summers, the mysterious former editor-in-chief of Mode, was modeled after the legendary longtime Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Fashion insiders might recognize a familiar resemblance!

Legendary costume designer Patricia Field created all the costumes for the Ugly Betty pilot. A New York resident, Field left the series when production moved to Los Angeles but returned as costume designer for Season 3, when filming relocated back to New York City.

That modern art museum exterior featured in the series isn't actually in New York. It's the New England Aquarium in Boston, with a few computer-generated alterations to give it the appropriate look!

When Ugly Betty won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2007, the celebration on set was apparently missing a few basic amenities. With ABC providing no catering, Vanessa Williams personally paid for a pop-up waffle station to treat the cast and crew.

Daniel Meade's transgender sister, Alexis, is supposed to be older than Daniel. But here's a fun real-life twist: Eric Mabius, who plays Daniel, is actually more than a year older than Rebecca Romijn, who portrays Alexis!

During the October 7, 2006, episode of Saturday Night Live, cast member Fred Armisen spoofed Ugly Betty by portraying a look-alike character named Fugly Betsy.

Although the fictional network Fashion TV is mentioned in Ugly Betty, it has no connection to the real-life television series or the French fashion channel of the same name.

Justin Suarez, Betty's fashion-loving young nephew who gradually discovers and comes to terms with his sexuality, was a particularly personal character for creator Silvio Horta. In an interview with USA Today, Horta, who was openly gay, revealed that he saw a great deal of himself in Justin.

After working with supermodel Naomi Campbell during her guest appearance in the Season 2 finale, Christopher Gorham, who played Henry Grubstick, publicly defended her. Despite her notorious reputation, he revealed that she was surprisingly kind and pleasant to him behind the scenes!

Memorable cameo! Grammy-winning singer Adele appeared during the show's third season, performing her song "Right as Rain" during a Mode magazine photo shoot.

During rehearsals for intimate scenes involving Eric Mabius and Salma Hayek her rescue dogs would frequently jump onto the bed! With a pack of approximately 12 dogs around, the camera crew often had to adjust its angles to accommodate the unexpected furry visitors.

Actress Jowharah Jones originally played Nico Slater, Wilhelmina's daughter, during Season 1. When the character returned in Season 4, she was portrayed by actress and model Yaya DaCosta.

Following the show's debut, Betty Suarez became such a recognizable television character that she inspired Halloween costumes across America. Those oversized glasses, colorful outfits, and unmistakable poncho made for an instantly recognizable look!

Showrunner Silvio Horta revealed in an interview that hiring Lindsay Lohan to play Betty's high school frenemy, Kimmie Keegan, was entirely the network's decision and went against his own wishes. Lohan was reportedly difficult to work with, and although she had signed on for six episodes in Season 3, her character was written out after just three appearances.

Following the cancellation of Ugly Betty, Eric Mabius sold everything in California and moved back to Massachusetts with his family. After taking time to reset his career and focus on family life, he eventually landed the long-running leading role of Oliver O'Toole in Hallmark Channel's popular Signed, Sealed, Delivered franchise.

When filming wrapped, America Ferrera held on to two of Betty Suarez's most recognizable accessories: her famous colorful poncho and oversized glasses. Two little reminders of a character who became such an important part of her career!

In a clever and symbolic touch, the word "Ugly" gradually faded from the show's title credits during the final episode. A fitting visual farewell to a series that spent four seasons reminding us that beauty is so much more than skin deep!
