The Unforgettable Women of Knots Landing

I’ve been a devoted Knots Landing fan for as long as I can remember. To this day, all 14 seasons, the unforgettable characters, and the countless storylines still hold a special place in my television-loving heart. Maybe that sounds a little obsessive—and honestly, it probably is! But from the moment I watched the very first episode until the emotional series finale, I was completely captivated by the lives of the residents of Knots Landing—especially the extraordinary women who called the cul-de-sac home.
Whether they were surviving troubled marriages, devastating illnesses, shocking murders, kidnappings, corporate takeovers, criminal investigations, drug-smuggling schemes, or heartbreaking family tragedies, these remarkable women faced it all with strength, resilience, wit, and unforgettable style. They made us laugh, cry, cheer, and gasp week after week, and decades later, they remain some of the most memorable female characters ever to grace television.
To celebrate my recent conversation with actress Constance McCashin on Episodes 177 and 178 of Hollywood Obsessed Podcast, I thought it would be the perfect time to revisit the incredible women who made Knots Landing such an enduring television classic. Constance, who brilliantly portrayed the long-suffering wife, devoted mother, and ultimately successful businesswoman Laura Avery Sumner for eight unforgettable seasons, shared wonderful stories about her time on the series and the cast that became television legends.
So join me as we take a nostalgic trip back to the cul-de-sac and celebrate the unforgettable women of Knots Landing. Whether you’ve been a fan since 1979 or you’re discovering the series for the very first time, I hope you’ll enjoy reminiscing about the women who made this groundbreaking primetime drama one of the greatest television series of all time.

Valene Ewing (Joan Van Ark)
Alongside Karen MacKenzie and Abby Cunningham, Valene Ewing was one of the legendary "Knots Core Ladies"—and without her, there would be no Knots Landing. She was truly the heart and soul of the series. First introduced on Dallas before becoming one of the central characters of its hit spin-off, Valene was beautifully portrayed by Joan Van Ark, who transformed her into one of television's most beloved heroines. With her Southern charm, radiant optimism, and incredible resilience, Valene captured the hearts of millions of viewers throughout the show's remarkable 14-season run.
Valene's story began when she fell in love with Gary Ewing, the troubled middle son of the powerful Ewing family. Their marriage was torn apart by Gary's manipulative older brother, J.R. Ewing, who stole their daughter, Lucy, and forced Valene out of Texas. Years later, Valene and Gary reunited and settled on the quiet cul-de-sac of Knots Landing, hoping for a fresh start—though happiness was never easy to find.
Throughout the series, "Poor Val" endured more heartbreak than perhaps any other character on television. She married Gary three times, believed her newborn twins had died after being deceived by a corrupt doctor, became a bestselling novelist by writing about her extraordinary life, and survived kidnappings, betrayals, murder plots, and countless personal tragedies. Yet through it all, Valene's strength, compassion, and resilience never wavered.
Van Ark portrayed Valene for 13 seasons, earning critical acclaim and multiple award nominations before reprising the role in the 1997 Knots Landing reunion miniseries and again in the 2013 revival of Dallas. More than four decades after her television debut, Valene Ewing remains one of the most iconic, relatable, and unforgettable women in the history of prime-time drama.

Karen Fairgate Mackenzie (Michelle Lee)
Proudly embracing the label of a "Pollyanna," Karen Fairgate MacKenzie was the compassionate heart, moral compass, and unwavering center of Knots Landing. Beautifully portrayed by Michele Lee, Karen appeared in all 344 episodes of the series from 1979 to 1993, making her one of only two cast members to appear in every episode.
While others schemed, manipulated, and chased power, Karen led with integrity, empathy, and an unshakable belief in doing what was right. As the neighborhood's trusted confidante, she was the friend everyone relied on during life's greatest triumphs and darkest moments, earning the admiration of both her neighbors and millions of viewers.
Karen's journey was one of resilience and growth. After the tragic death of her husband, Sid Fairgate, she courageously took over Knots Landing Motors, proving herself to be a successful businesswoman. She later became active in politics, environmental causes, and community affairs while finding lasting love with federal prosecutor Mack MacKenzie, whose partnership brought renewed happiness and stability to her life.
Michele Lee brought Karen to life with warmth, intelligence, humor, and emotional authenticity, creating one of television's most beloved heroines. Honest, dependable, and endlessly compassionate, Karen remained the soul of Knots Landing—the woman audiences trusted, admired, and rooted for from the premiere to the unforgettable series finale.

Laura Avery Sumner (Constance McCashin)
Introduced in the first season of Knots Landing, Laura Avery Sumner evolved into one of the series' most beloved and relatable heroines. Beautifully portrayed by Constance McCashin, Laura began as an unhappily married housewife living on Seaview Circle with her husband, Richard Avery. Over the years, she blossomed into a confident, independent businesswoman with a successful career in real estate before finding lasting love with the powerful and enigmatic Greg Sumner.
Laura's journey was one of extraordinary growth, resilience, and heartbreak. After overcoming the challenges of a troubled marriage and divorce, she built a new life for herself, only to be diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. In one of the most emotional storylines in Knots Landing history, Laura chose to spend her final days at a private clinic, saying goodbye to her loved ones with remarkable courage and dignity.
Laura's death remains one of the most unforgettable moments of the series. Her funeral, featured in the landmark 200th episode, was made even more powerful by creator David Jacobs' decision to have the cast spend an entire weekend improvising their grief before filming. The result was one of the most authentic and heartbreaking farewell scenes ever seen on primetime television. Like countless Knots Landing fans, I was absolutely devastated when Laura was written off the series in 1987. She was the heart and conscience of Seaview Circle, and her loss left a void that was never truly filled.
To learn more about Constance McCashin's remarkable career, be sure to listen to my heartfelt two-part conversation with her on Hollywood Obsessed Podcast (Episodes 177 and 178). We discuss her unforgettable years as Laura Avery Sumner, her transition from actress to psychotherapist, and the behind-the-scenes stories and treasured memories that made Knots Landing one of television's most beloved primetime dramas.

Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing (Donna Mills)
Introduced in the second season, Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing exploded onto Knots Landing and forever changed the series. Brilliantly portrayed by Donna Mills from 1980 to 1989, Abby quickly became one of television's most iconic soap opera villains. With her impeccable fashion, glamorous beauty, signature smoky eye makeup, and razor-sharp intelligence, she captivated audiences as a woman who would stop at nothing to gain power, wealth, and influence. Decades later, Abby remains one of the most unforgettable "soap vixens" in television history.
Created as the female counterpart to J.R. Ewing from Dallas, Abby arrived on Seaview Circle with a friendly smile that concealed a calculating mind. While the neighborhood initially welcomed her with open arms, it didn't take long for her true ambitions to emerge. Masterfully manipulating everyone around her, Abby became the show's ultimate strategist, using charm, deception, and determination to stay several steps ahead of her rivals. Before landing this career-defining role, Mills was best known for playing sweet, vulnerable heroines. Eager to break free from typecasting, she embraced Abby with relish, creating the role that would define her career.
Throughout the series, Abby's personal and professional lives were fueled by relentless ambition. Her multiple marriages—including to Gary Ewing and later Greg Sumner—reflected her desire for influence as much as romance. A fearless entrepreneur, she built a successful real estate empire, owned and operated restaurants, and routinely found herself entangled in high-stakes business deals, political intrigue, and dangerous power struggles. Yet despite her ruthless tactics, Abby's intelligence, confidence, and charisma made her impossible not to admire, even when viewers loved to hate her.
Donna Mills portrayed Abby for nine extraordinary seasons before leaving the series in 1989 while the character was still at the height of her popularity. She returned for the acclaimed two-part series finale in 1993 and reprised the role one final time in the 1997 reunion miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac. Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing remains one of the greatest female antiheroes in television history—a character whose wit, ambition, and unapologetic pursuit of success helped elevate Knots Landing into one of the most compelling and sophisticated dramas of the 1980s.

Ginger Ward (Kim Lackford)
Ginger Ward, beautifully portrayed by Kim Lankford, was one of the original residents of Seaview Circle and remained a series regular during the first four seasons of Knots Landing (1979–1983). Warm, kind-hearted, and endlessly supportive, Ginger served as the emotional anchor of her marriage to ambitious music executive Kenny Ward. As one of the cul-de-sac's closest-knit neighbors, she shared a special friendship with Gary and Valene Ewing while navigating the everyday joys and heartbreaks of young married life. Her storylines explored Kenny's demanding career, his infidelity, Ginger's struggles with self-confidence, and the challenges of pregnancy before she welcomed the couple's daughter, Erin.
Although Ginger often found herself hurt by Kenny's choices, she faced life's obstacles with grace, resilience, and quiet strength, making her one of the series' most relatable early characters. In 1983, Ginger and Kenny reconciled and relocated to Nashville, marking their departure from the series. Kim Lankford later delighted longtime fans by reprising the role in the 1997 reunion miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac, returning to help Karen and Mack MacKenzie's celebrate their fifteenth wedding anniversary and reminding viewers why Ginger remained such a beloved member of the Knots Landing family.
*************************************************
Lilimae Clements (Julie Harris)
Lilimae Clements, magnificently portrayed by five-time Tony Award winner Julie Harris, was one of Knots Landing's most colorful and unforgettable characters. Introduced as the estranged mother of Valene Ewing, Lilimae first appeared as a recurring guest star before becoming a series regular from 1981 to 1987. A free-spirited country singer who had left her daughter behind to pursue a music career, Lilimae arrived on Seaview Circle carrying years of guilt, regret, and emotional baggage. As mother and daughter slowly confronted their painful past, their relationship evolved into one of the series' most heartfelt and rewarding journeys, marked by forgiveness, unconditional love, and the occasional dose of Lilimae's well-intentioned meddling.
With her Southern charm, eccentric personality, quick wit, and fiercely protective nature, Lilimae brought warmth, humor, and emotional depth to every scene she graced. Her storylines explored turbulent romances, including her rocky marriage to Jeremiah Clements, while also showcasing her unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Julie Harris' remarkable performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1982, and her portrayal remains one of the most celebrated guest-turned-regular performances in Knots Landing history. Lilimae's unforgettable spirit and enormous heart made her a fan favorite whose presence enriched the series for years.

Paige Matheson (Nicolette Sheridan)
Paige Matheson, beautifully portrayed by Nicollette Sheridan, brought a fresh wave of glamour, intelligence, and ambition to Knots Landing when she made her unforgettable debut at the end of Season Seven. Arriving on Seaview Circle with a bombshell secret, Paige claimed to be the long-lost daughter of Mack MacKenzie, though no one knew whether she was telling the truth or orchestrating an elaborate deception. Having fled the wealthy but controlling world of her mother, Anne Winston Matheson, Paige's shocking revelation kept viewers guessing until a DNA test ultimately confirmed that Mack was, in fact, her biological father. As one of the show's younger leading ladies, Paige quickly became a central figure through her passionate, often turbulent romance with Greg Sumner and her emotionally charged relationship with Anne.
During her seven-season run, Paige became deeply involved in corporate power struggles, family secrets, and high-stakes romance, proving she could more than hold her own among Knots Landing's legendary cast of characters. Sheridan infused the role with confidence, vulnerability, wit, and undeniable charisma, making Paige one of the series' most compelling and beloved heroines. Sheridan returned for the 1997 reunion miniseries, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac, delighting longtime fans and cementing Paige Matheson's place as one of the show's most memorable and enduring leading women.

Anne Matheson Sumner (Michelle Phillips)
Anne Matheson Sumner, brilliantly portrayed by actress and former The Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips, was one of the final great villains of Knots Landing. Introduced in 1987, the glamorous, calculating socialite wasted no time turning Seaview Circle upside down with her charm, manipulation, and relentless pursuit of wealth and power. Anne shared a complicated history with Mack MacKenzie as his first great love, and her return years later ignited one of the series' most explosive storylines as she relentlessly tried to destroy Mack's marriage to Karen. She was also the biological mother of Paige Matheson, though her relationship with her daughter was defined more by manipulation and self-interest than genuine maternal love.
Throughout her six-season run, Anne stopped at nothing to get what she wanted. After failing to win Mack back, she set her sights on wealthy tycoon Greg Sumner, eventually marrying him for his fortune and social status. Her schemes ranged from faking a suicide attempt to regain Mack's attention and attempting to steal Paige's inheritance to joining forces with a criminal in an elaborate art theft. Michelle Phillips brought sophistication, elegance, and deliciously wicked charm to every scene, making Anne Matheson Sumner one of the most memorable femme fatales in Knots Landing history and a character fans loved to hate.

Ciji Dunne / Cathy Geary (Lisa Hartman Black)
Lisa Hartman Black accomplished something truly remarkable during her run on Knots Landing, portraying two completely different—but forever intertwined—characters: Ciji Dunne and Cathy Geary. Her first role, Ciji, became the center of one of the series' most unforgettable mysteries, while her second, Cathy, allowed Hartman Black to remain a beloved presence on Seaview Circle for several more seasons. Together, the two characters showcased her impressive range as both an actress and singer.
Ciji Dunne (1982–1983)
Introduced during the fourth season, Ciji Dunne was a gifted but vulnerable nightclub singer whose beauty and talent captivated everyone around her, including Gary Ewing. As romantic tensions and dangerous rivalries mounted, Ciji found herself caught in a web of jealousy and obsession that ended in tragedy. Her shocking murder became one of Knots Landing's most iconic storylines, launching a gripping "whodunit" that kept audiences guessing. Fans were so devastated by Ciji's death that the backlash was overwhelming, making her one of the most memorable short-lived characters in the series' history.
Cathy Geary / Cathy Geary Rush (1983–1986)
Responding to the enormous fan reaction, the writers brought Lisa Hartman Black back the following season as Cathy Geary, an aspiring singer who bore an uncanny resemblance to the late Ciji. Initially introduced as part of an elaborate impersonation scheme, Cathy soon emerged as a warm, spirited, and determined young woman with a life and personality all her own. Her storylines explored her pursuit of a singing career and her ill-fated marriage to the emotionally unstable televangelist Joshua Rush, portrayed by Alec Baldwin. Hartman Black remained a series regular through the seventh season, and her performances as both Ciji and Cathy remain among the most memorable and beloved in Knots Landing history.
*************************************************
Jill Bennett (Teri Austin)
Jill Bennett, brilliantly portrayed by Teri Austin, ranks among the most unforgettable villains in Knots Landing history. Appearing from 1985 to 1989, Jill was introduced as an intelligent, ambitious, and highly successful attorney, but over time she descended into one of the series' most dangerously obsessive antagonists. Consumed by her love for Gary Ewing, Jill's growing jealousy and desperation gradually transformed her into a master manipulator willing to destroy anyone who stood between her and the life she wanted. Austin's riveting performance earned her the 1990 Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Villain and cemented Jill's place among television's greatest soap opera femme fatales.
Jill's obsession with Gary reached its terrifying peak because of his enduring bond with his ex-wife, Valene Ewing, the mother of his twin children. Convinced that Valene would always be Gary's true love, Jill spiraled into paranoia and violence. In one of Knots Landing's most shocking storylines, she broke into Valene's home, held her at gunpoint, and forced her to swallow a bottle of sleeping pills in an elaborate attempt to stage her death as a suicide. Although Valene survived, Jill manipulated the evidence in an effort to convince everyone that Valene had simply suffered a mental breakdown. It remains one of the most chilling and unforgettable moments in the series' history.

Portrayed by Tonya Crowe, Olivia evolved from an innocent little girl into a compassionate, independent young woman despite being surrounded by the constant turmoil created by her ambitious and often manipulative mother. While Abby's relentless pursuit of wealth and power frequently placed Olivia in difficult situations, she never lost her kindness, warmth, or strong moral compass. Though she occasionally rebelled and tested her parents' patience, Diana's warmth, relatability, and determination made her a character audiences enjoyed watching grow up. Lonow brought charm and authenticity to the role, helping establish the Fairgates as one of television's most enduring and beloved families.
*************************************************
Mary-Frances Sumner / Kate Whittaker (Danielle Brisebois & Stacy Galina)
One of Knots Landing's most unusual casting decisions saw actress Stacy Galina portray two completely different characters during the series' run.
Mary-Frances Sumner was the daughter of powerful business tycoon Gregory Sumner (William Devane). Introduced in Season 5, the role was originally played by child actress Danielle Brisebois. When the character returned in Season 11, she was aged into adulthood and recast with Stacy Galina. Mary-Frances' long-awaited reunion with her father was tragically short-lived when she was brutally murdered by her abusive boyfriend in Greg's office, one of the series' most shocking and heartbreaking deaths.
Following Mary-Frances' death, the producers were so impressed with Stacy Galina's performance that they brought her back the following season as an entirely new character—Kate Whittaker, Mary-Frances' identical cousin. Kate was the daughter of Greg's manipulative sister, Claudia Whittaker. Warm, athletic, and compassionate, Kate arrived in Knots Landing as a promising college tennis player whose dreams were cut short by a career-ending arm injury. She quickly became a beloved member of the Seaview Circle community and eventually found love with Gary Ewing. After the series concluded in 1993, Stacy reprised the role in the 1997 reunion miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac, where it was revealed that Kate and Gary had a four-year-old daughter named Molly.

Intelligent, sophisticated, and endlessly manipulative, Claudia had a talent for turning family loyalty into personal gain, making her a formidable adversary for anyone who stood in her way.
An anthropologist from New York, Claudia arrived in Knots Landing with her daughter, Kate Whittaker, after learning that Greg was suffering from a life-threatening liver disease. Hoping to secure a share of her brother's vast fortune, her timely arrival prompted Greg to quip, "The vultures are circling." Kathleen Noone relished every deliciously wicked moment of the role, earning a 1992 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Prime Time Soap Opera. Determined to protect her family's fortune and legacy, Ruth pressured Greg to resign from the U.S. Senate and take control of Galveston Industries, ultimately getting exactly what she wanted. She also meddled relentlessly in Greg's personal life, doing everything she could to destroy his relationship with Laura Avery by convincing Laura that Greg was having an affair with Abby Cunningham. Never one to shy away from intrigue, Ruth even joined forces with Abby to obtain the stolen notebook pages that could expose the shady dealings of Scott Easton.
